Maureen O’Brien, of Bethpage, brought a colorful, handmade “GO JOHNNY GO” poster, which I spotted while sitting on the floor near her front row seat.

When I gave Ms. O’Brien a heads up I might need to grab the back of her chair later on when I stood up, she offered to switch places with me.  I thanked her for such generosity, but ended up staying on the floor.

Since I had my sweatshirt under my knees when kneeling, I could comfortably focus on capturing the governor speaking – without notes – to the audience, which frequently applauded and cheered.

Guantanamo Bay Courtroom Artist Janet Hamlin at Hofstra

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
December 27, 2013

After hearing an NPR interview (WNYC) with Janet Hamlin, the only courtroom sketch artist allowed to depict Guantanamo Bay military tribunals from 2006-2012, I was excited to learn Hamlin was coming to Hofstra to discuss her work and new book “Sketching Guantanamo.”

Hempstead, New York, U.S. 12th November, 2013. Janet Hamlin, a courtroom artist covering the military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay since 2006, shows her charcoal drawings and discusses her work at Hofstra University. Much of the time she was the only journalist providing a visual record of the events at the United States naval base in Cuba, and her new book "Sketching Guantanomo" is a collection of her images. Seeing several of Hamlin’s original large sketches on brown paper and hearing the challenging – and, at times, surprising – restrictions placed on her Guantanamo work, were highlights of the artist’s visit, which ended with a book signing.

Woodward & Bernstein on 40th Anniversary of Watergate

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
November 18, 2012

Riding past the Watergate Hotel in 1973, during the summer I spent job hunting in Washington, DC, I stared at the curved buildings as if enough willpower would summon a recreation of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters there a year earlier.

March 20, 2012 - Hempstead, New York, U.S. - BOB WOODWARD (left) and CARL BERNSTEIN (right), investigative journalists, speak on 40th Anniversary of the Watergate political scandal, at Hofstra University. The lecture was about their investigation, while Washington Post reporters, into the break-in, and its cover-up, of the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Wash. DC, which lead to the resignation of Pres. Nixon. (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

In 1974 President Nixon resigned after investigations spearheaded by Washington Post Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists BOB WOODWARD and CARL BERNSTEIN revealed break-in cover-up attempts that led all the way to the White House. And in 1976 the Academy Award-winning movie based on their non-fiction book All the President’s Men vividly brought to life the events that both brought down a president and profoundly altered the perception of the institution of the American presidency.

Forty years later, on March 20, 2012, Woodward and Bernstein spoke about the Watergate legacy at Hofstra University, which the Commission on Presidential Debates chose as the site of its October 16, 2012 Presidential Debate. It was to be the first of a long series of outstanding Hofstra Debate 2012 Signature Events – all open and free to the public – that I covered this year.
