New York International Auto Show 2017

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry ( ann-parry.com )
April 13, 2017

Wednesday I covered the New York International Auto Show 2017, which I’d been looking forward to ever since NYIAS 2016. It was raining a bit when my train reached the city, so I bought an umbrella at Penn Station, mainly to protect my camera.

After a quick walk around the 3rd Floor, I caught the Porsche Press Conference, which was also the first one I caught last year. At the Exotics section I focused mainly on the Spyker C8 Preliator, Keonigsegg Agera RS, and the Rolls-Royce Dawn with its Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet ornament.

Lexus once again displayed eye-catching New York Fashion Week cars, and I had the chance to interview Beau Valenzuela, who was part of the SCPS Unlimited crew that created the programmable light display with roughly 42.000 LEDS on the Lexus LIT IS 350.

As I left Javits Center early that evening, I paused to capture the colorful reflections on its glass walls, then headed back to Penn Station.

Soon after the train started, I opened a not-cold-enough can of soda that sprayed on my Nikon and me. Yikes! Two neighbors gave me tissues, and a fellow across the aisle handed me lens spray and wipes. It turned out he shoots videos and was also returning from NYIAS, so we talked cars and photography and videos till I got up for my stop.

“Her Story Through Art” Invitational Show at Huntington Arts Council

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
February 16, 2017

I’m thrilled to be one of four artists in Huntington Arts Council’s “Her Story Through Art” Invitational Show! The Opening Reception – Friday, March 3, 2017, from 6-8 pm – is free and open to the public.

POSTCARD: "Her Story Through Art" Invitational Show at Huntington Arts Council. Opening Reception Friday, March 3, 2017, from 6 - 8 PM. Artists: ANAHAI DeCANIO, ANN PARRY, TARA LEALE PORTER, IRENE VITALE.

Since the exhibit celebrates Women’s History Month, I selected pieces from my portrait and news photography that focus on females of all ages – with emphasis on women passionately involved in civics and politics, the arts, and volunteering.

Fellow artists ANAHI DeCANIO, TARA LEALE PORTER, and IRENE VITALE are also showcased in this exhibit. It’s fun preparing for the exhibit with them, and I’m looking forward to seeing their work in person.

RECEPTION – MARCH 3, 2017 – Friday’s Opening Reception was special for so many reasons – most notably because guests experienced four such distinct approaches to women expressing themselves through art. And the cutest reason the night was special for me was that my grandchildren, who are one-and-a-half and almost five years old, were there, along with their mom, dad, and Aunt Laurie.

Other much-appreciated visitors included friends and fellow photographers from Long Island Center of Photography; plus, several people featured in my photos came with their families.

TAKE DOWN DAY – MARCH 27, 2017 – When Bob and I arrived on “Take Down Day” after the show ended, Irene’s and Anahai’s art was already gone, and Tara was spackling where she had removed hooks from wall. Later, when I took a break from wrapping my canvases, Tara showed me how plants were sprouting in her sculpture terrarium.

Seeing the beginning of this new life  –  what a lovely way to end “Her Story Through Art.”

U.S. Presidential Inauguration Parade 2017

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
December 31, 2016

Yesterday, I read the exciting news that Long Island’s own Nassau County Firefighters Pipes & Drums will participate in the Inauguration Parade on January 20, 2017.

Originally known as “Fir Na Tine” (Gaelic: Men of Fire), it’s America’s first Volunteer Firefighter Pipe Band, and has performed widely, including at St. Patrick’s Day parades, at halftime shows for NY Jets, and band members were the 11 Pipers Piping in a Christmas commercial.

Also, Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums has been an inspiring, stirring part of many memorials and benefits. In spring 2012, I covered the band when it played at the Ray Pfeifer Benefit at the East Meadow Firefighters Benevolent Hall. Retired FDNY firefighter and Hicksville resident Ray Pfeifer is a true profile in courage, perseverance, and brotherhood.

FYI From Long Island: After the 9/11/2001 Twin Towers terrorist attacks, Pfeifer helped recovery efforts at Ground Zero, and by 2008 was battling cancer. Pfeifer – along with Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, Representatives Peter King and Carolyn Maloney, and others – helped make sure the 2010 James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act was eventually extended to 2090.

When the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band participates in the U.S. Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington DC in a few weeks, it will be continuing its mission of proudly representing the Nassau County Fire Service.

To help the band reach its $10,000 goal to cover transportation & lodging costs for its 40+ members, their band manager created a gofundme fundraiser: “Presidential Inauguration Parade” for the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes & Drums.
