Buzz Aldrin, Welcome to Mars

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
October 26, 2015

Aiming for up front seating at the Buzz Aldrin event at Cradle of Aviation Museum this past Saturday, Bob and I arrived at CAM well over an hour early. Waiting on line wasn’t bad, though, since I got to chat with a really nice family whose son wore an astronaut suit to see his hero in person.

Garden City, New York, USA. October 23, 2015. Former NASA astronaut Edwin BUZZ ALDRIN is in conversation about his experiences in space and his new Children's Middle Grade book Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet. After the talk at the jetBlue Sky Theater Planetarium at Long Island's Cradle of Aviation Museum, Aldrin signed copies of his new book. On the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon, and his first trip to space was the 1966 Gemini 12. (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

In the jetBlue Sky Theater Planetarium, ‘The Real Buzz’ had a conversation with his Mission Director, Christina Korp, and had time to answer several questions from children in the audience.

Then, Aldrin left the theater to sign copies of his new book Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet, a National Geographic Kids book geared for Middle Grade children. And where was the book signing?  CAM’s Red Planet Cafe!

New York Comic Con 2015

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
October 16, 2015

I’ve never been at a more bustling or friendly event than New York Comic Con was last Saturday, October 10, 2015, at Javits Center.

Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. October 10, 2015. L-R, Astronaut Robert (Beamer) Curbeam, who is currently tied for the record for most spacewalks (4) during a single spaceflight, and Captain JERRY LINENGER, a retired NASA astronaut and United States Navy flight surgeon, are two of the panelists on Secret Space Escapes - The Real Life Gravity Panel, at the 10th Annual New York Comic Con. Secret Space Escapes is a new series scheduled to begin November on the Discovery Science Channel. NYCC 2015 is expected to be the biggest one ever, with over 160,000 attending during the 4 day ReedPOP event, from October 8 through Oct 11, at Javits Center in Manhattan (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

If you’re familiar with my photos and posts of Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Museum over the years, you won’t be surprised my favorite panel at NYCC was about Science Channel’s new series Secret Space Escapes, which shares true stories of things going terribly wrong in space and how astronauts faced those challenges.

Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. October 10, 2015. SOYEON YI, the first South Korean in space, is a panelist on Secret Space Escapes - The Real Life Gravity Panel, at the 10th Annual New York Comic Con. Secret Space Escapes is a new series scheduled to begin November on the Discovery Science Channel. Born in 1978, Yi went into space when she was 29, traveling on Russia's Soyuz TMA-12 to the International Space Station (ISS). Astronauts Robert (Beamer) CurbeamJerry Linenger, and Soyeon Yi shared their personal harrowing space experiences at the Secret Space Escapes – The Real Life Gravity Panel. It was an honor meeting them all, with their warmth and laser focus – and Soyeon was born the same year as my older daughter! My family’s looking forward to the premiere of Secret Space Escapes on November 10th.

Cosplayers ALANA, from NJ, who is Princess Buttercup, and NICK, from NJ, who is Westley the Dread Pirate Roberts, are portraying characters from W. Of the thousands of creative, dramatic cosplayers, above are my sentimental favorites – Princess Buttercup and The Dread Pirate Roberts AKA Westley, from William Goldman’s The Princess Bride.

One of the popular interactive attractions was STAR WARS Battle Pod Flat Screen Edition, with multiplay mode that allowed two players to play as a team.

And let’s not forget Artist Alley, which had vast aisles of talented comics artists – such as Peter Kuper, Louise Simonson and Walt Simonson, Sanya Anwar, and Luke Ross – where fans had a chance to meet them, have comic books autographed, and some artists even offered option of commissioning original work.

NYCC had it all – astronauts, cosplayers, artists, games….  INCONCEIVABLE!

“The Interview” Opens at Merrick Cinemas on Christmas

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
December 31, 2014

On Christmas morning, I read that The Interview, the comedy by Sony Pictures Entertainment, was playing at Merrick Cinemas, the only movie theater showing it in Nassau County, Long Island. So, even though I still had most of my Christmas present wrapping left, I headed out to capture news photos before the first show, 12:30 pm.

In November, hackers hacked – yes, that sounds like coughing – Sony Pictures computers, and later threatened theaters planning to show The Interview, in which stars James Franco and Seth Rogen play civilians recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korea’s dictator.

Due to the terrorist threats, Sony originally canceled public release of the film, but then changed its plans again, and released the film in a limited way, including several hundred independent theaters. Several people who bought tickets to the movie in Merrick said they were seeing it mainly to protest the attempt to suppress Americans’ Right to Free Speech.
