Band Shell Concert at Sunset Park, Port Washington

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
July 27, 2014

It felt like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting when I attended the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band Shell concert, complete with a friendly greeting from Port Washington’s Lions Club mascot, at Sunset Park, on Manhasset Bay, during a vibrant  July 11th sunset.

The Port Washington Community Summer Concert Band, with Conductor Aaron Prindle, presented the program “Red, White, and Youth” – including iconic patriotic songs and ones younger audience members easily recognized, such as the theme from Daft Punk’s Tron movie soundtrack.

International Slow Art Day 2014

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
April 15, 2014

Saturday, a sunny warm spring day here on Long Island,  was International Slow Art Day, so I visited the Garden Party exhibit and the outdoor sculptures at the Nassau County Museum of Art.

A few of the pieces I lingered at were the Tiffany Studios lamp Chanson de printemps after Bouguereau, the pink and green rhinestone tulip minaudière, and a bouquet of designer dresses with flower motifs.

And I lay down on the grass to enjoy the daffodils.

NCMA’s Garden Party exhibit, which runs through July 6, 2014, is delightful after our winter of snows.

Tackapausha Museum & Preserve, Science Exploration Moon Day

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
July 28, 2013

Science Exploration Moon Day – despite landing during a week-long heat wave – attracted many Long Islanders, especially families, to the Tackapausha Museum and Preserve in Seaford, New York, on July 20, 2013.

Members of Friends of Tackapausha and seasonal and part-time employees and volunteers at Tackapausha walked around animal residents, such as Zouzi the corn snake and Maple the Rabbit.

And children and adults were actively engaged in the science projects, such as creating green slime in the museum, and shooting off water bottle rockets outdoors.

Commemorating the 44th Anniversary of the 1969 First Moon Landing, the successful event also featured moon art and performances by Long Island artists, presented by Long Island Fringe Festival 5.
