Eternal Con 2014 Long Island

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
June 16, 2011

Last weekend’s Eternal Con 2014 was even more colorful and lively than I expected – with sci-fi, horror, comics artists, comic books & other collectibles, gaming, celebrities, and costumes – outside and inside the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

Garden City, New York, U.S. - June 14, 2014 - L-R, DIMITRIOS HARITOS, CHRIS HARITOS, and STEVE CARABELLO, all of the Selden Centereach area, from the Long Island Ghostbusters, a charitable volunteer group, are at Eternal Con, the annual Pop Culture Expo, with costumes, Comic Books, Collectibles, Gaming, Sci-Fi, Cosplay, Horror, and held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island. A few of the many people I got a chance to see were Armored Combat League members USA Knights, Amtgard & Dagorhir, the charitable volunteer group Long Island Ghostbusters, Zippy Dee The Wonder Dummy, Lindsay Lowe comics fashionista, members of NYC Harry Potter meetup group “The Group That Shall Not Be Named,” and actress Catherine Mary Stewart.

And it certainly was family fun, for Saturday morning, hours before I visited, my older daughter’s family enjoyed watching the Cosplay Parade, visiting booths selling rare Transformers, and more.

At yesterday’s program “Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,’ the Long Island Children’s Museum had a room full of families with young children eager to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Stacey Lee, LICM’s Outreach Director, presented information about Dr. King’s life, and the children read his famous 1963 speech “I Have a Dream.”

Then, with directions from Lee and some help from the moms and dads, each child created a unique, colorful collage of peace.

A Night in Bethlehem

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
December 10, 2013

Friday night, I went back in time to A Night in Bethlehem, where visitors enjoyed grinding olivesmaking beeswax candles and other activities at re-creations of shops from two thousand years ago, and experienced a Living Nativity manger scene with Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus, complete with animal stable.

Garden City Vintage Car Parade and Show

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
April 3, 2013

Last Sunday, Garden City Chamber of Commerce’s 58th Annual Easter Vintage Car Parade and Show featured hundreds of antique, classic and special interest motorcars. Though a gray, cold, windy day, happily the rain held off till that night.

This Pierce-Arrow luxury convertible, with two Easter Rabbits in back seat, is the lead car in the 58th Annual Easter Sunday Vintage Car Parade and Show sponsored by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce. Hundreds of authentic old motorcars, 1898-1988, including antiques, classic, and special interest participated in the parade. (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

Seeing skillfully, lovingly restored and maintained cars meant even more when owners shared the restoration process, brought to life through photos and paperwork that document the process.

Some parade participants and spectators wore Easter Bonnets, Rabbit Ears, or outfits appropriate for specific vehicles. A volunteer firefighter with the 1932 Ford Fire Engine of the Garden City Volunteer Exempt Firemans Association wore, you guessed it, a fireman’s coat.
