Town of Hempstead & Nassau County Elections 2017: All Come to Look for America

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry  (ann-parry.com)
November 22, 2017

The Town of Hempstead and Nassau County 2017 elections permeated the fabric of my life this year.

Because countless Long Islanders and campaign events – candidates & their supporters, press conferences, traditional & social media, fundraisers & meetings… – are part of the material, I’ll focus on its pattern, not the threads.

Since I’ve been capturing news photos of Long Island civics and politics for years, it didn’t strike me as unusual when I covered the January 15th “Our First Stand Rally” at Westbury supporting the Affordable Care Act, and the January  24th visit to Sen. Schumer’s L.I. office in Melville by the activist group Together We Will Long Island.

Later, however, I realize there had been a difference. Both my daughters participated in the “Our First Stand” rally, and my older daughter Sue was the TWWLI administrator at the Schumer office visit, and those were first times Sue and Laurie were at political events I covered.

Though the post-Inauguration Women’s Marches, the Resist Trump Tuesdays… certainly were helping raise awareness of protestors’ reactions to the Trump administration’s health care, advice from Bernie Sanders and some others strongly stuck in my mind: Protesting isn’t enough. “Resistors” need to run for office and to help fellow activists run for office.

Then I covered the January 30th Press Conference in Uniondale when Nassau County Democratic Party leaders endorsed LAURA CURRAN for N.C. Executive and JACK SCHNIRMAN for N.C. Comptroller. Up till then, I had photographed Nassau County Legislator Curran at a couple of local events; plus I knew she broke with fellow Democrats to vote with the GOP majority to approve capital borrowing for projects held up for over half of 2016.

John Kasich Hosts Town Hall at Hofstra

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)

This eventful week of presidential primary events on Long Island started off with John Kasich, Republican candidate and Governor of Ohio, hosting a Town Hall on Monday at Hofstra University.

Maureen O’Brien, of Bethpage, brought a colorful, handmade “GO JOHNNY GO” poster, which I spotted while sitting on the floor near her front row seat.

When I gave Ms. O’Brien a heads up I might need to grab the back of her chair later on when I stood up, she offered to switch places with me.  I thanked her for such generosity, but ended up staying on the floor.

Since I had my sweatshirt under my knees when kneeling, I could comfortably focus on capturing the governor speaking – without notes – to the audience, which frequently applauded and cheered.
