America’s Gilded Age of the late 1800s: a tale for today

For his special birthday during Thanksgiving weekend, Bob chose to visit Nassau County Museum of Art’s new exhibit ‘Our Gilded Age.’ which runs through March 10, 2024.

As I showed my member card in the lobby, the staffer told us tours recently began and pointed to the room where we could join one. What lucky timing!

The Nassau County Museum of Art is located on the former Frick ‘Clayton’ estate in the heart of Long Island’s Gold Coast, making ‘Our Gilded Age’ exhibit a natural.

During the tour, our engaging docent JOAN QUATRANO explained the history of the Clayton estate.

In 1913 Henry Clay Frick, co-founder of U.S. Steel, was going to give his son Childs and new daughter-in-law Frances Dixon an expensive bauble as a marriage present. When Francis said she’d prefer a mansion, Frick gave them the Clayton estate.

“The Gilded Age robber barons – the Goulds, the Vanderbilts, the Morgans and Rockefellers – did quite well under laissez-faire. Most of the rest of Americans were still stuck in the ditch, with little to no economic security….” – Ben Fountain (b. 1958) Chapel Hill, NC

Nassau County Museum of Art Photowalk

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
February 15, 2012

Despite having to shove my fingers in my coat pocket whenever they got too cold to set my Nikon’s dials and buttons – I had a great visit, outdoors and in, at the Nassau County Museum of Art this weekend.

It was a joint scouting expedition with one of my fellow co-leaders of the Long Island Photowalk and three members of NYPhotoForum. We spent quite a while photographing statues – which ranged from the sublime to the absurd – scattered throughout the grounds.

And later, after the others left, I joined the docent tour of the current exhibition: the Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany, plus some Tiffany lamps, windows, and more.

And yes, I took all the photos of this winter visit with Nikkor 16mm 180-degree fish-eye lens.
