You Can’t Spell ‘Joyce Chinsky’ without ‘JOY’

Friends and Families

My dear friend JOYCE CHINSKY died, after a long, spirited struggle against cancer, on September 30th – It doesn’t seem real.

Joyce and I first met in the early 1980’s when we were fellow English teachers at Grand Avenue M.S. in Bellmore. Over the following decades, our activities often included family, especially her husband BOB and son PETER, when he was a child, and my daughters SUE and LAURIE.

There were the summers we went with our young children to our friend Carolle Bendle’s beach club.

We had Broadhollow Theater subscriptions for ourselves and our children.

Joyce, my daughters and I had NYC excursions. She joined my extended family to root for the Parry Girls’ team on a game show taped in a studio in Hell’s Kitchen on a rainy day in 2006, and the three of us went to a Hillary Clinton rally in 2008.

Starting in 2012 when the first of my two grandchildren arrived, Joyce regularly asked about them and visited each.

When Sue ran for local office a few years ago, Joyce enthusiastically supported her, including going to a Merrick fundraiser.

Bob and Joyce took me with them on day trips out east on L.I. and to enjoy Bob’s photography in exhibitions….

Every lucky group has a Connector – the person who, with love and work, keeps people in touch over the years, often as locations and circumstances change. Joyce was a Connector in so many meaningful ways, including organizing annual “Grand Girls” lunches for retired and active teachers.

Since I can’t find words to share how I feel right now, here’s some of what my daughters group-texted when they read Joyce was gone:

LAURIE: “Oh my god I’m so sorry to hear this!!! This is so awfull!!! I’m so sorry…She was suuuuuch a sweet woman….❤️”

SUE: “Oh my gosh. I’m devastated to hear this news. This is so sad Oh my gosh ”

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Married in RVC House

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (annparry.com)

RBG’s 1954 wedding at Rockville Centre home

When iconic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died of metastatic pancreatic cancer on September 18th, Long Island media included coverage about Martin Ginsburg’s family home in Rockville Centre, where he and Bader were married the summer of 1954.

The Colonial, which overlooks the Rockville Links Golf Course, reminded me of the homes in the RVC area my family lived in during the late 1980’s.

Checking Google maps, I saw the former Ginsburg – and current Chloe and Brian Schiele – family home was less than a mile north of where my family lived decades ago.

I simply had to photograph where the woman who would become the Notorious RBG was married.

“It’s Overwhelming!”

Soon after arriving, I met BRIAN SCHIELE and his daughter MAEVE, and we chatted as I captured photos.

Though her parents have known about the Ginsburg connection since they bought the house in 2016 from Martin Ginsburg’s sister and brother-in-law, Claire and Edward Stiepleman, Maeve first found out after Justice Ginsburg died.

Since then, Maeve has had a chance to share the history of her home with her classmates.

When asked how the past few days have been, Meave said, “It’s overwhelming!”

Later, though clearly busy, CHLOE SCHIELE kindly paused so I could photograph her in the front yard.

Bader and Ginsburg chose to have their wedding at his family house so they could save money for their European honeymoon.

Ruth Bader also lived at the home for a while, and Brian Schielle pointed out the room he GUESSED was her bedroom.  It had been built as a maid’s room and was on the right side of the house. He felt it was likely the other bedrooms were already occupied by the Ginsburg family.

VIDEO  – Greg Hoffman during Reading of Names :

During the Reading of Names of the 348 Nassau County residents who died as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on September 11, 2002, each speaker ended by sharing about the loved one lost. Greg Hoffman was one of those readers (from above video):

“For my identical twin brother, Stephen Gerard Hoffman: It’s been 19 years, Steve, when you took Madeline to kindergarten. She’s a teacher now. She’s 24, and she’s beautiful. You’d be so proud of her

“One thing special about, unique about, September 11 is that the day of terror doesn’t end.
This January we buried a young man, Jim Bass. He was NYPD.
Age 30 he went onto the pile
Age 49 he died of the cancer

“May they all rest in peace.

“May God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change
Courage to change the things we can
And the wisdom to know the difference.”
