When my brothers and I were quite young, we had fun summer days at the nearby Park Avenue School summer program. In crafts, we each made more lanyards and loop belts than necessary, but when they headed to sports, I headed to art classes. 

Not too long ago, an oil painting – a portrait of a woman – I created back then surfaced in my basement. But even before that I remembered the portrait because of my mom’s reaction to what the art instructor told her about it.

In the painting, the woman’s seen in profile, with blond hair swept up high. Her shoulders are at the lower left corner, and her long curved neck carries her head to the upper right.
