Outdoor Holiday Fun

The North Merrick Fire Department escorted Santa in his sleigh throughout our community the night of December 19. It’s a tradition our family looks forward to each year, and the snow lined streets made it particularly festive.

After Santa and his firefighter helpers visited our street, I drove across town to the Community Holiday Tree and Lumiere Walk.

Twenty-nine North Merrick homes had their front yards decorated, each in a different theme, for the Community Holiday Tree and Lumiere Walk the night of December 19, 2020.

Two of the many themes my family enjoyed were:  “A Very Murray Christmas” starring a festive photo of actor Bill Murray, and “Candy Cane Lane” featuring a candy cane stand and metal pit fire.

What a creative and fun way to celebrate the holiday season while also staying outside and observing social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic!

North Merrick Runners – safety comes first

The North Merrick Runners club used staggered start times during its practice run October 18th to ensure social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking forward to cheering on my daughter Sue and her fellow NMR members, I began looking near Park Avenue School for runners about 3:20 PM, optimistically soon after the 3:00 scheduled start time.

VIDEO  (with music; clips not chronological):
I looked up the sidewalks and road for a while. Then I told my neighbor, who was working in his front yard, that runners in the North Merrick Runners club would be passing by soon, which they did.

After cheering and videoing each runner, and hearing my neighbor also cheer before he left, I stayed on the lookout until at least ten minutes, but no runners, passed by.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Married in RVC House

RBG’s 1954 wedding at Rockville Centre home

When iconic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died of metastatic pancreatic cancer on September 18th, Long Island media included coverage about Martin Ginsburg’s family home in Rockville Centre, where he and Bader were married the summer of 1954.

The Colonial, which overlooks the Rockville Links Golf Course, reminded me of the homes in the RVC area my family lived in during the late 1980’s.

Checking Google maps, I saw the former Ginsburg – and current Chloe and Brian Schiele – family home was less than a mile north of where my family lived decades ago.

I simply had to photograph where the woman who would become the Notorious RBG was married.

“It’s Overwhelming!”

Soon after arriving, I met BRIAN SCHIELE and his daughter MAEVE, and we chatted as I captured photos.

Though her parents have known about the Ginsburg connection since they bought the house in 2016 from Martin Ginsburg’s sister and brother-in-law, Claire and Edward Stiepleman, Maeve first found out after Justice Ginsburg died.

Since then, Maeve has had a chance to share the history of her home with her classmates.

When asked how the past few days have been, Meave said, “It’s overwhelming!”

Later, though clearly busy, CHLOE SCHIELE kindly paused so I could photograph her in the front yard.

Bader and Ginsburg chose to have their wedding at his family house so they could save money for their European honeymoon.

Ruth Bader also lived at the home for a while, and Brian Schielle pointed out the room he GUESSED was her bedroom.  It had been built as a maid’s room and was on the right side of the house. He felt it was likely the other bedrooms were already occupied by the Ginsburg family.
