Wednesday night, Legislator Seth Koslow kicked off his campaign for Nassau County Executive. Koslow, a Democrat, is challenging County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican.

Why Koslow’s running for County Executive

To make Nassau County Affordable“Lower property taxes and implement fiscally responsible policies to ease the financial burden on families and small business.”

This could the most important priority for Nassau County residents and business owners, considering Nassau County’s high taxes and high cost of housing, as a start.

To Eliminate Wasteful Spending“End unnecessary lawsuits, inflated salaries, and administrative bloat to ensure your tax dollars are used effectively.”

To Strengthen Communities“Invest in public safety, education, infrastructure, and essential services that improve quality of life for all.”

Early last year, Blakeman proposed a controversial plan that would, he claimed, increase public safety: the creation of an armed deputy force:

Blakeman wanted to deputize armed private citizens for use, as he explained it, “for devastating emergencies” like extreme weather disasters and power outages.

In mid-April, a group of Nassau County residents submitted a petition with over 2000 signatures to the Nassau legislature. The group urged the lawmakers to seriously examine the proposal for “Blakeman’s militia,” as the residents called it.

Democrats accused Blakeman of aiming to create an illegal militia that might be used, for example, against public protests unpopular with the Republican’s agenda.

But on December 30, 2024, Blakeman swore in 26 special deputies.

The provisional special deputy sheriffs receive pay for training, plus when, if ever, they provide service.

If any, in their capacity as a special deputy, are named in a lawsuit, how might that affect Nassau County’s already high cost for attorneys, at the least?

To Govern Transparently“Introduce strict accountability measures to make sure every dollar is spent in the best interest of Nassau County residents.”

On December 16, 2024, Bruce Blakeman, with the support of the Republican-controlled county legislature, formally made New York Post Nassau County’s official newspaper.

Our official newspaper can get hundreds of thousands of advertising dollars for county notices that are legally required.

Until mid-December, Newsday was Nassau County’s official newspaper. Its Nassau County readership and coverage are significantly larger than New York Post’s is.

Why did Blakeman make the MAGA tabloid New York Post the official newspaper of Nassau County?

One might say the question contains the answer.

As I wrote in a recent post – Flagging Bruce Blakeman & New York Post –  Newsday and many other media sources have covered Blakeman’s unpopular decision not to lower county flags for a full 30 days – like the rest of our nation is doing right now – to commemorate President Jimmy Carter.

New York Post did not cover that.

Also, Newsday and several other area media sources* (see below for examples) have reported that Legislator Seth Koslow has officially launched his campaign against Bruce Blakeman for Nassau County Executive.

New York Post has yet to cover that.

Does it sound like New York Post was handpicked by Bruce Blakeman as Nassau County’s official newspaper to provide transparent, adequate, balanced coverage of, and for, Nassau County?

Koslow’s background

Seth Koslow served as a Queens County Assistant District Attorney from 2013 until 2016, when he set up his own legal practice, SIK. He’s admitted to practice law with New York State and New Jersey Bars, plus the Federal Bar for Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.

In 2023, Koslow was elected Nassau County Legislator for the newly redrawn 5th District, which includes parts of Freeport, Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick.

Koslow’s the Ranking Member of the Public Safety Committee, and also serves on these six committees: Finance, Minority Affairs, Health & Social Services, Veterans, Government Services and Operations, and Towns, Villages & Cities.

Koslow’s an active community member. For example, in 2024 he played in a Merrick Mayhem coaches softball game and was an umpire for the Bellmore/Merrick Moms Softball Classic. His wife Jill has a bakery in North Bellmore. The Koslows live in South Merrick with their three children, Sam, Jaclyn and Julia, and their rescue dog Coco.

Updated Jan. 2022: Election results added near end of post

‘When labor votes, the state wins’Gov. Hochul, 10/30/2022, Mineola, N.Y.

The New York governor’s race has become unexpectedly close.

Two days after early voting started in New York, and nine days before Election Day 2022, Democratic candidates and supporters – largely from labor unions – gathered for a Nassau County Rally with Governor Hochul.

“Nassau

The Sunday, October 30th event was held outdoors during a sunny autumn afternoon at the Local 338, RSDSU UFCW workers union site in Mineola, Long Island.

After many candidates, labor union leaders, and democratic leaders on stage spoke, it was time for Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado to speak and then introduce Gov. Kathy Hochul.

VIDEO: Lt. Gov. Delgado speaks and then introduces Gov. Hochul:

During Lt. Gov. Delgado’s impassioned speech about WHY it’s so important to vote, and to vote for democratic candidates, particularly for Gov Hochul, the enthusiastic audience frequently punctuated his points by clapping and calling out “That’s right… “Say it again!”… “Preach!”….

The following transcript of Lt. Gov. Delgado’s speech is from the above video that starts shortly after he begins speaking at the podium.

Transcript of Lt. Gov. Antonio’s Speech (from video above):

[…Referring to some Republican candidates] “….only in it for the game. It’s all a joke. And they play with people’s lives. Like it’s a game. And it’s not.

“We have to step up as people and demand more. We just have to. We have to set the bar.
Integrity, decency, honesty.
Are you principled?
Do you care?
Do you know how to love people?
These things have to matter.
To our democracy to matter.
Education has to matter.
And labor has to matter.

“Any political leader worth their salt that can’t get behind collective bargaining and organized labor needs to not be in public service.
The story of upward mobility, the story, the American Dream.
This whole idea is based on working folk coming together and fighting for more.
To raise their families up across generations.
And you want to call yourself a leader, destroy that?
Come on now. Seriously.
We know we can do better. And guess what folks, we can and we will.

“I got to know Governor Hochul very well.
We talk about the stakes. A lot.
We don’t, we don’t spend time foolin’ around and being political about… oh about this, how..
What are we going to do?
What are the solutions?
How’re we going to govern, to the people?
Those were our conversations.

“She cares. She’s a worker.
From the ground up, not top down.
Not imposing her will, but engaging with the will of the people.
And she leads from the heart, from the heart.
Honest. Upfront. Accessible. Accountable.
The kind of things you want in a leader.
Not gonna lie to your face. Or fear monger. Or peddling hate.
You have that chance right now.

“So whatever people are saying out there.
All the head scratching, all the twitt-r feeds, and all the chaos and the noise.
Forget about it. Put it to the side.
The only thing we should be doing right now is action, not thinking.
Act.
Show up.
And vote and support an absolutely amazing governor who is dedicated to the people.
Who will fight for the people.
Who comes from the people.
Our governor – Kathy Hochul.”

SPEECHES

    • VIDEO: Speeches by Gov. Cuomo, Liuba Grechen Shirley, & Sen. John Brooks:

The series of four speeches started and ended with a joke about the sweltering weather.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran went to the podium in the packed office, and the crowd laughed when she smiled and said clothes wouldn’t be coming off despite the heat.

When the County Executive endorsed Liuba Grechen Shirley, the reasons Curran gave to vote for her, and other Democrats, included how Republicans are anti-New York State – by passing the tax reform provision removing state and local tax deductions – and are anti-gun control, pro NRA.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo

Curran introduced Governor Andrew Cuomo, an unannounced special guest.

The governor seconded the importance of getting reasonable gun controls, despite NRA’s influence.

Cuomo said how Republicans have a different fundamental view of America as a nation, including being anti-immigrant and abandoning Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. He added how New York sued the federal government for family separation.

“And Laura Curran’s point is very important. They [Republican Congress members] are anti New York State, what they did in their tax reform last year. They passed a provision that removed the deductibility of state & local taxes….

Why? Because they want to hurt New York. This federal provision raises property taxes by 30% like that, overnight. We have to get Washington to reverse it….

“I am tired of the Republican Congress people from New York saying — when I said, ‘Why would you pass a bill that hurts your own people?’ That’s what the SALT bill did. It hurt this state. It hurt their constituents ‘Why would you do it?’ — they say, ‘Well, we’re powerless. We’re powerless.’

You know what?  That’s baloney. They have been enablers for this president….

“And I’ll tell you how we stop Congress from doing bad acts to New York. We elect Democratic Congress people who will stand up and protect New York.

“We elect Liuba Grechen Shirley. We let Liuba tell them the truth, and stand up for women’s rights, and immigrant rights, and for gun safety, and for New Yorkers….

“We let Liuba stand up in Washington and explain how Progressive policies made this state the greatest state in the United States of America….

“We elect Liuba, and then we elect John Brooks, and Lou D’Amaro, and Monica Martinez, and Jim Gaughran, and we take over the State Senate.”

Massapequa, NY, USA. August 5, 2018. Liuba Grechen Shirley, Congressional candidate for NY 2nd District, gives speech at podium after Gov. Cuomo endorses her. (© 2018 Ann Parry/AnnParry.com)

Liuba Grechen Shirley

Liuba Grechen Shirley, a first-time candidate, thanked Cuomo for endorsing her and for New York having the strongest Paid Family Leave policy in America, and said she was excited at the prospect of working with him, Lou D’Amaro, and Sen. John Brooks.

“…It’s critical we take back the [NY] Senate, and flip the House. What is so exciting about our campaign is that it’s completely grass roots, We out raised Peter King this quarter, and we did it without any corporate PAC money….”

“This seat has been held for 25 years by a Republican, by Peter King, who refuses to even meet with his constituents. He actually told me that holding a Town Meeting would diminish democracy….

“He does not represent the values of our district, and we need a representative who will actually listen to everyone in this district. Who will fight in Washington to make sure that we actually have a government is taking care of working families in this district, not their corporate donors….

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. This is about values. Who is going to stand up for our values.”

Sen. John Brooks

Senator Brooks first thanked Governor Cuomo for the outstanding job he is doing in Albany.

“…Our governor was the one that  stood up first and recognized what the federal tax changes would do to New York State…. [SALT Bill]  an 18-billion-dollar tax increase for New Yorkers….

“We hear the president say he wants to make America great again… All we have to do is act like Americans…..

“Lou and I are going to go to the Senate to stand up for Long Island and deliver the products and services that we need in terms of good government….

“Thanks everybody for being here, and remember it’s supposed to snow later this afternoon.”
