Flagging Bruce Blakeman & New York Post

NOT in Bruce Blakeman’s ‘Backyard’ (NIBBBY): Flags are lowered 12/29-1/28 for our country’s 30 day commemoration of President Jimmy Carter’s death – but not in Nassau County.

When Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, wouldn’t lower county flags starting Dec. 29, 2024, to honor President Jimmy Carter, like the rest of America did, our county became a nationwide embarrassment.

But you can’t read about any of that in the New York Post – which is now the official newspaper of Nassau County, thanks to Blakeman with the support of the Republican-controlled Nassau County legislature.

President Biden ordered flags at federal buildings to be put at half-staff for thirty days – from December 29th to January 28th – in honor of the late former president, who died at the age of one hundred.

State governors, including New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul, directed state flags to fly at half staff during those thirty days.

This follows the U.S. Flag Code 4 USC 7 related to the death of U.S. Presidents. The flag code is advisory, not mandatory.

Yesterday, January 5th – after facing widespread negative media coverage*  (see below for examples) – Blakeman said that Nassau County will lower flags at county operated buildings, but just for this Tuesday through Thursday.

These three days cover when President Carter lies in state, starting January 7th, until he is buried on the National Day of Mourning, January 9th.

Does anyone in Nassau County doubt that Bruce Blakeman would have lowered county flags starting December 29, 2024, if President Carter had been a Republican?

SLIDESHOW  (photo video with music):

As Bob and I walked toward the Elderfields House, I was surprised to see that Susan Tiffen, my friend and fellow photographer, was already leaving the reception for The Art Guild’s Abstract Realms exhibit.

After hugs, she explained she’d come to attend the private viewing of Lasting Impressions, the documentary about Juror of Awards Dan Welden, and it had just finished.

What?!

It turned out that both Bob and I somehow had missed The Art Guild’s online and email announcements that it was presenting “Lasting Impressions,” the 2023 documentary on Dan Welden, immediately before the reception.

A variety of film festivals, organizations and venues have already presented “Lasting Impressions.” Here’s the trailer for the documentary:  productionhub.com/video/79050/trailer-for-lasting-impressions

DAN WELDEN, the Juror of Awards, is a globe-trotting painter, teacher, author, and master printmaker. He’s worked actively for health and safety in the arts.

He co-authored “Printmaking in the Sun with Pauline Muir, and is the director of Hampton Editions, Ltd. For over a half century he’s collaborated with artists such as Willem de Kooning and Kiki Smith.

Here’s an illuminating quote from his website, danwelden.com:

“I am a process person, interested in employing  materials and techniques to the ‘landscape’ of my mind. My drawings, paintings and prints evolve from the idea of linear pathways echoing  from the tracks of animals in nature, fissures in rock palisades and the  patterns created by my hands becoming ‘playful’ with my tools.”

Lisa Lin & Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco: Time for Change

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
September 19, 2024                    – OPINION –

Lisa Lin – State Senate District 5 – lisalin4ny.com
Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco – State Assembly Dist. 14 –
ellen4assembly.com

Tuesday night I went to ‘Coffee with the Candidates’ in Merrick. It was a chance to meet and learn more about Democrats Lisa Lin for NY State Senate District 5 and Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco for NY State Assembly District 14.

First, Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco introduced herself and her key issues:

• Cost of Living
• Women’s Reproductive Rights
• Education
• Environment
• Public Safety
• Life Quality for Seniors

Lederer DeFrancesco is challenging NY Assemblyman Dave McDonough,  an 87-year-old gentleman who lives in the same town I do.

I’ve attended a wide variety of civic and political events over the past decade, but the most recent time I’ve seen McDonough was on Nov. 8, 2016, as he and his family headed into Park Avenue Elementary School to vote.

From the Long Island Herald October 27, 2020 piece endorsing Dave McDonough:

“…He indicated that this would likely be his last term in office if he is re-elected — with nearly 20 years in Albany under his belt, he said it would soon be time to “move on….”

New York State Assembly 14 constituents deserve a representative who will actively work on important issues: Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco.

Then, Lisa Lin introduced herself and her key issues:

• Stand Up for Working Families
• Get Serious about Safety
• Defend Public Education
• Advocate for the Disability Community
• Stand Up to Hate & Bigotry
• Protect Our Environment
• Advocate for Reproductive Freedom
• Support Seniors
• Promote Small Business
• Fight for Common Sense Gun Laws

Lisa Lin is challenging NY Senator Steve Rhoads, who’s quite a pleasant fellow.

But Lin’s issues are more aligned with mine. Plus she has solid, relevant education and experience, including earning a law degree, and working in public service and as Supervising Court Attorney.

  • UPDATE – Oct. 10, 2024 – Newsday endorses Lisa Lin for New York State Senate 5th District

During each of their dynamic presentations, Lisa Lin & Ellen Lederer DeFrancesco welcomed questions. After both presentations, guests had lots of time to speak with each candidate individually.

I’m certainly glad I attended the informative ‘Coffee with the Candidates.’
