Seth Koslow for Nassau County Executive Spring Gala

June 4, 2025

Five months until Nov. 4, 2025, General Election

SETH KOSLOW, the Democratic candidate for Nassau County Executive, had a Spring Gala at City Cellar in Westbury this Monday.

His special guests were JAY JACOBS, the NYS Chair of the Democratic Committee; Congressman TOM SUOZZI; and former Nassau County Executive LAURA CURRAN.

VIDEO– from Seth Koslow’s speech at Spring Gala, 6/2/2025:

Koslow, a Nassau County legislator (LD 5 – Merrick), is challenging current Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican. On his site “TruthSocial,” President Trump endorsed Blakeman.

First, Jacobs, Gillen, and Suozzi each spoke in support of Koslow’s candidacy. They also stressed how important it is to vote during this odd-year election. Voter turnout is traditionally lower when local races are the only ones on the ballot.

Koslow’s speech

After Koslow introduced his family and shared a brief background about himself, he explained why Nassau County needs a new County Executive. Then he said what his major goals are for the office of Nassau County Executive and gave examples of ways he plans to achieve those goals once he’s elected.

(© 2025 Ann Parry/AnnParry.com)

  • his background

Seth Koslow was born in Baldwin, and he and his wife Jill are raising their three children, who go to public schools, in Merrick.

After leaving the DA office, he started his own legal practice in this area.

When he ran for Nassau County legislator two years ago, he was able to get the backing of all three police unions because, as he said, they understood he isn’t extreme and he wants to get the job done.

  • change needed

Koslow said, “Under Bruce Blakeman, our taxes have gone up and our trust has gone down, and that’s a problem, We have to change that.”

  • militia

Koslow said that the first thing he’s going to do when elected is “disband that ridiculous militia.”

  • potholes – police patrols – property taxes

Summarizing most of what he’s running for and why he’s running, Koslow said, “This campaign is all about potholes, police patrols, and property taxes.”

So, he explained, “if it doesn’t make it more affordable to live here, if it doesn’t keep you safer, or it doesn’t fix a road, it’s simply not a priority.”

  • make county more affordable

Koslow said that, as soon as he’s elected and takes office, he’ll enlist the State Controller’s Office to do a full audit of county spending.

He’ll cut wasteful spending to give back to the taxpayers.

Koslow’s goal is to get things done, to do the job – unlike, he said, the current county executive.

outside legal fees

To save money Koslow’s going to cut 15 million dollars spent on outside legal feels in outside council.

county cars

Koslow said many non-essential employees have some of the over 100 county cars, with insurance gas and vehicles paid for by the county. He wants to stop this unnecessary spending.

  • safety

Koslow will work with police departments and police unions to find inefficiencies, to make sure departments are fully staffed, and police officers aren’t overworked with so much overtime.

He said, “And I want to make sure our police are doing the best they can to keep us the  safest county in America, that they were under Laura Curran.”

  • his promise

Seth Koslow promised, “I’m going to be a county executive for everybody… I’m going to do what’s best for Nassau County.”

Democrat Seth Koslow for Nassau County Executive

Wednesday night, Legislator Seth Koslow kicked off his campaign for Nassau County Executive. Koslow, a Democrat, is challenging County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican.

Why Koslow’s running for County Executive

To make Nassau County Affordable“Lower property taxes and implement fiscally responsible policies to ease the financial burden on families and small business.”

This could the most important priority for Nassau County residents and business owners, considering Nassau County’s high taxes and high cost of housing, as a start.

““Seth

To Eliminate Wasteful Spending“End unnecessary lawsuits, inflated salaries, and administrative bloat to ensure your tax dollars are used effectively.”

To Strengthen Communities“Invest in public safety, education, infrastructure, and essential services that improve quality of life for all.”

Early last year, Blakeman proposed a controversial plan that would, he claimed, increase public safety: the creation of an armed deputy force:

Blakeman wanted to deputize armed private citizens for use, as he explained it, “for devastating emergencies” like extreme weather disasters and power outages.

In mid-April, a group of Nassau County residents submitted a petition with over 2000 signatures to the Nassau legislature. The group urged the lawmakers to seriously examine the proposal for “Blakeman’s militia,” as the residents called it.

Democrats accused Blakeman of aiming to create an illegal militia that might be used, for example, against public protests unpopular with the Republican’s agenda.

But on December 30, 2024, Blakeman swore in 26 special deputies.

The provisional special deputy sheriffs receive pay for training, plus when, if ever, they provide service.

If any, in their capacity as a special deputy, are named in a lawsuit, how might that affect Nassau County’s already high cost for attorneys, at the least?

To Govern Transparently“Introduce strict accountability measures to make sure every dollar is spent in the best interest of Nassau County residents.”

On December 16, 2024, Bruce Blakeman, with the support of the Republican-controlled county legislature, formally made New York Post Nassau County’s official newspaper.

Our official newspaper can get hundreds of thousands of advertising dollars for county notices that are legally required.

Until mid-December, Newsday was Nassau County’s official newspaper. Its Nassau County readership and coverage are significantly larger than New York Post’s is.

Why did Blakeman make the MAGA tabloid New York Post the official newspaper of Nassau County?

One might say the question contains the answer.

As I wrote in a recent post – Flagging Bruce Blakeman & New York Post –  Newsday and many other media sources have covered Blakeman’s unpopular decision not to lower county flags for a full 30 days – like the rest of our nation is doing right now – to commemorate President Jimmy Carter.

New York Post did not cover that.

Also, Newsday and several other area media sources* (see below for examples) have reported that Legislator Seth Koslow has officially launched his campaign against Bruce Blakeman for Nassau County Executive.

New York Post has yet to cover that.

Does it sound like New York Post was handpicked by Bruce Blakeman as Nassau County’s official newspaper to provide transparent, adequate, balanced coverage of, and for, Nassau County?

Koslow’s background

Seth Koslow served as a Queens County Assistant District Attorney from 2013 until 2016, when he set up his own legal practice, SIK. He’s admitted to practice law with New York State and New Jersey Bars, plus the Federal Bar for Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.

In 2023, Koslow was elected Nassau County Legislator for the newly redrawn 5th District, which includes parts of Freeport, Bellmore, Merrick, North Bellmore and North Merrick.

Koslow’s the Ranking Member of the Public Safety Committee, and also serves on these six committees: Finance, Minority Affairs, Health & Social Services, Veterans, Government Services and Operations, and Towns, Villages & Cities.

Koslow’s an active community member. For example, in 2024 he played in a Merrick Mayhem coaches softball game and was an umpire for the Bellmore/Merrick Moms Softball Classic. His wife Jill has a bakery in North Bellmore. The Koslows live in South Merrick with their three children, Sam, Jaclyn and Julia, and their rescue dog Coco.

April 5, 2023                      – fLI OPINION –

Nassau County Republican Committee Unhitches its Wagon from Uprising Star Trump

On April Fools Day, the Nassau County Republican Committee hosted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

DeSantis pitched his Florida Blueprint – politics to the right of Trump – to Long Island.

Before the event started, a few dozen protestors were waving colorful pro-Trump flags at cars passing near CAM’s entrance on Charles Lindberg Blvd.

For though the Long Island event was nominally a stop on the governor’s book tour, it was more importantly an unofficial campaign stop for his undeclared presidential candidacy.

So the Nassau County GOP clearly was no longer acting all in for Trump.

Tickets were free, and the first 300 attendees received a free copy of DeSantis’ new book ‘The Courage to be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.’

Early in the event, Nassau County Republican chairman JOSEPH CAIRO introduced several GOP leaders sitting in the VIP section.

Prominent Republicans politicians who stood up included Rep. PETE KING (R-Seaford), who attended with his wife Rosemary Weidl; former Sen. AL D’AMATO (R-NY)), who sat with his ex-wife Katuria D’Amato and their two children; and Rep. ANTHONY D’ESPOSITO (R-Island Park).

Cairo then introduced each speaker, including Nassau County Executive BRUCE BLAKEMAN, former Rep. LEE ZELDIN (R-N.Y.), and, finally, FLA Gov. RON DESANTIS.

While speaking at the podium, Gov. DeSantis commented about the U.S. Navy F11A Tiger jet suspended overhead and how he had served in the Navy.

While earning his law degree from Harvard University, DeSantis joined the U.S. Navy in 2004, and from then to 2010 was a naval officer in the Judge Advocate General Corps. JAGS are attorneys with knowledge of civilian and military law.

DeSantis made many comparisons between Florida and New York, and between Florida and the U.S. government.

An aside: DeSantis said so much he meant as unflattering about New York that I wondered how it struck his hosts.

NO STATE INCOME TAX – The governor said how Florida, unlike New York, has no state income tax, and how his state has the warmer weather, though no mention was made of his state’s growing hurricane season. And he stressed in how [once COVID increased workers’ opportunity to work from home] the biggest increase in U.S. migration to Florida has come from New York recently.

CULTURE WARS – Abortion, Education, COVID 19, LGBTQ Rights, Gun Safety….

But it was Opposite Day when Gov. DeSantis presented ways his Trumpian conservative brand of anti-woke CULTURE WARS supposedly is making Florida free. For example:

‘Don’t Say Gay’ law

The governor portrayed his authoritarian approach to what Florida’s schools aren’t allowed to say and do as somehow increasing freedom.

Florida is where folk go to die from guns   cdc.gov states map

DeSantis continued to claim Florida has lax gun safety regulations because largely unfettered gun rights are constitutionally guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

And those regulations are getting even laxer.

On April 3rd, at a non-public event two days after he spoke on Long Island, DeSantis signed legislation allowing residents to carry a concealed loaded weapon without a permit anywhere in the state.

“Gov Ron DeSantis; Trump flags

Second Amendment, ratified in 1791:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”

DeSantis’ approach to gun safety makes solid sense, as long as one ignores a few things:

1) The first half of the amendment, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,” states the reason for giving the rights is in order to maintain a well regulated Militia. How is that related to a person owning assault rifles, carrying concealed weapons without permits…?

2) In 1791 “Arms” referred to handguns or long guns that could hold one shot at a time.

3) Florida’s rate of deaths due to gunfire is about 3X that of New York, which has significantly stronger gun safety regulation. cdc.gov states map

with faint praise:

Though Ron DeSantis isn’t quite as big a danger to America as insurrectionist Donald Trump is, the United States of America needs far better than either.

Thankfully, they won’t be our only candidates, Republican or otherwise, for president in 2024.
