‘Resist Trump Tuesdays’ TWWLI Visits Sen. Schumer’s LI Office

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
January 26, 2017

This Tuesday, activist groups such as MoveOn, Indivisible, and Together We Will made their first Resist Trump Tuesdays visits to government representatives to express concerns related to President Trump. Members of Together We Will Long Island visited the L.I. office of U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that afternoon.

The wet, windy weather didn’t stop 15 members of TWWLI from driving to the Melville office building, where they gathered in the lobby for some final preparation, and then took the elevator up to Senator Schumer’s office.

When a staffer answered their knock on the door, it was clear the office couldn’t fit the 15 members, so they met with GARRET ARMWOOD, the senator’s L.I. Regional Director, in a nearby hall surrounding a circular staircase.

SUE MOLLER, who’s one of TWWLI’s admins and my daughter, had arranged the group’s drop-in visit and written a letter to the senator that stated the group’s concerns over Trump’s Cabinet appointees. After she read the letter to Armwood, several group members asked him questions and brought up additional concerns.

  • FYI from FLI:  #StopTrumpTuesday – #ResistTrumpTuesdays – #SwampCabinet are 3 hashtags related to this event.

Later, back in the lobby, the members agreed the meeting was a success. TWWLI plans to continue dropping by Senator Schumer’s office to express their concerns regarding Trump each Tuesday* during the President’s first 100 days in office.  (*see update below)

UPDATE 2/6/2017:  On Resist Trump Tuesdays, members from more than one activist organization continue to protest outside the Melville offices of Senators Gillibrand and Schumer.

TWWLI aims to communicate as effectively as possible its ongoing concerns about Trump’s goals & actions. So, at this time, rather than have a large group of TWWLI members go to the senators’ L. I. offices, a few of them will drop off items such as members’ short videos (that will also be posted on twitter), snacks, and notes at each office.

U.S. Presidential Inauguration Parade 2017

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
December 31, 2016

Yesterday, I read the exciting news that Long Island’s own Nassau County Firefighters Pipes & Drums will participate in the Inauguration Parade on January 20, 2017.

Originally known as “Fir Na Tine” (Gaelic: Men of Fire), it’s America’s first Volunteer Firefighter Pipe Band, and has performed widely, including at St. Patrick’s Day parades, at halftime shows for NY Jets, and band members were the 11 Pipers Piping in a Christmas commercial.

Fundraiser for firefighter Ray Pfeifer - battling cancer after months of recovery efforts at Ground Zero following 9/11 2001 Twin Towers attack - draws supporters from New York, Massachusetts and more, on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at East Meadow Firefighters Benevolent Hall, New York, USA. Also, Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums has been an inspiring, stirring part of many memorials and benefits. In spring 2012, I covered the band when it played at the Ray Pfeifer Benefit at the East Meadow Firefighters Benevolent Hall. Retired FDNY firefighter and Hicksville resident Ray Pfeifer is a true profile in courage, perseverance, and brotherhood.

FYI From Long Island: After the 9/11/2001 Twin Towers terrorist attacks, Pfeifer helped recovery efforts at Ground Zero, and by 2008 was battling cancer. Pfeifer – along with Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, Representatives Peter King and Carolyn Maloney, and others – helped make sure the 2010 James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act was eventually extended to 2090.

When the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band participates in the U.S. Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington DC in a few weeks, it will be continuing its mission of proudly representing the Nassau County Fire Service.

To help the band reach its $10,000 goal to cover transportation & lodging costs for its 40+ members, their band manager created a gofundme fundraiser: “Presidential Inauguration Parade” for the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes & Drums.
