Being Part of ‘Her Story Through Art’

I’m thrilled to be one of four artists in Huntington Arts Council’s “Her Story Through Art” Invitational Show! The Opening Reception – Friday, March 3, 2017, from 6-8 pm – is free and open to the public.

POSTCARD:

‘Her Story Through Art’ Invitational Show, at Huntington Arts Council, March 2017. Artists: Anahai DeCanio, Ann Parry, Tara Leale Porter, Irene Vitale. I captured photo of actress Kelli Vonshay Henderson during LIIFE 2016 Awards Ceremony at Bellmore Movies.

Since the exhibit celebrates Women’s History Month, I selected pieces from my portrait and news photography that focus on females of all ages – with emphasis on women passionately involved in civics and politics, the arts, and volunteering.

Fellow artists ANAHI DeCANIO, TARA LEALE PORTER, and IRENE VITALE are also showcased in this exhibit. It’s fun preparing for the exhibit with them, and I’m looking forward to seeing their work in person.

Friday’s Opening Reception was special for so many reasons – most notably because guests experienced four such distinct approaches to women expressing themselves through art. And the cutest reason the night was special for me was that my grandchildren, who are one-and-a-half and almost five years old, were there, along with their mom, dad, and Aunt Laurie.

Other much-appreciated visitors included friends and fellow photographers from Long Island Center of Photography; plus, several people featured in my photos came with their families.

TAKE DOWN DAY – March 27, 2017

When Bob and I arrived on “Take Down Day” after the show ended, Irene’s and Anahai’s art was already gone, and Tara was spackling where she had removed hooks from wall. Later, when I took a break from wrapping my canvases, Tara showed me how plants were sprouting in her sculpture terrarium.

Seeing the beginning of this new life  –  what a lovely way to end “Her Story Through Art.”

More Than a Century of Photos at Nassau County Museum of Art

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
February 4, 2017

Entering the first gallery of the “Over a Hundred Years of Photos” exhibits at the Nassau County Museum of Art, I spotted a docent with a group of visitors at the far right end of the room – and I love tours – so my friend Bob and I headed over to join them.

After a detour to study a large vintage wooden camera, I joined the tour as docent MAXINE HERSH was discussing first  “Animal Locomotion, Man and Donkey” in 1887, a series of 30 photo capturing the movement of subjects by groundbreaking motion-capture photographer EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE (American – 1830-1904), and then the iconic “Migrant Mother” in 1936, by American photographer DOROTHEA LANGE.

On the second floor was the “New Photos, Long Island Collects” exhibit. One of my favorite photos in the gallery rooms was an Eden-like image of two black girls by Dutch photographer RUUD VAN EMPEL. The young girls and their verdant paradise setting don’t actually exist in real life, however, for the image is composited from hundreds of photos, material swatches….

After the tour was over, Bob and I lingered In the hallway to enjoy two composite photos, “Conductor” and “Man on a Pier,” by Long Island photographer ALAN M. RICHARDS (b. 1944). Richards is a fellow member of the Long Island Center of Photography (LICP), and I’ve also admired his work during opening receptions at Long Island galleries in Huntington.

LIIFE 2016 Long Island International Film Expo

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
July 23, 2016

The 19th Annual Long Island International Film Festival kicked off its Awards Ceremony this Thursday with Host Kevin Brown (Dot Com in 30 Rock) welcoming filmmakers and film lovers.

Then Brown served his first helping of topical humor – notably about a certain national political convention that, like LIIFE 2016, was in its final night.

Singers ROBBIE ROSEN, from neighboring Merrick, and SARAH BARRIOS, each a mere three years older than LIIFE itself, sang solo and together. Their duet “Chains” – which they performed both that night and in the Musical Video that went on to win that category – was one of restrained raw emotion and distinctive, complimentary singing styles.

Bernhard Rammerstorfer, from Austria, accepted the Alan Fortunoff Humanitarian Award for his documentary Taking the Stand, which he directed, produced and wrote to share the “Testimonies of Holocaust Survivors and Victims of Nazi Tyranny.”  Before leaving the stage, Rammerstorfer gave LIIFE a bottle of Organic Austrian Plum Schnaps,  which he cheerfully described at length.

Actor CATHY MORIORITY (Vikki LaMotta in Raging Bull) gave an affectionate introduction to LIIFE’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, ED ASNER, who’s best known to my generation as cranky, lovable Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and to my grandson as widower Carl in Pixar’s animated Up.

Not coincidentally, the documentary My Friend Ed – a portrait of Asner the actor and activist, by director and producer Sharon K Baker and co-writers Baker and Daniel R. Collins – made its Long Island debut at LIIFE 2016.

Long Island’s own Angela Anton – the Publisher of Anton Community Newspapers, and a philanthropist and volunteer, including Board President of the Nassau County Museum of Art – received the Humanitarian Award.
