Nunley’s Carousel Centennial Celebration

Nunley’s Amusement Park was a real treat for my daughters when they were young. After riding the carousel and a couple of outdoor rides, we’d have ice cream and play Skee-ball, winning red tickets to exchange for prizes.

So when Nunley’s closed in 1995, our whole family was sad to lose that Freeport-Baldwin landmark.

Happily, by 2009 the carousel was beautifully restored and moved to its new home in Museum Row, Garden City.

Nunley’s Carousel Centennial Celebration held this past weekend, June 9th – 10th, gave visitors the chance to play croquet in front of Nunley’s Carousel Pavilion and have other old-fashioned fun.

Festivities also included a campaign visit from ex-President Theodore Roosevelt – portrayed by actor JAMES FOOTE. In 1912, the year Nunley’s Carousel debuted, Teddy Roosevelt ran again for President in 1912 – unsuccessfully, as Bull Moose Party candidate.

And your admission fee included a ride on historic Nunley’s Carousel, where lucky and athletic riders had a chance to grab a brass ring to win a free ride.

When I heard that 13-year-old SHEIMYRAH MIGHTY a talented Jamaican Haitian American I first photographed singing at a 2008 rally at Long Island’s Eisenhower Park – would sing the U.S. National Anthem at the 2nd Annual Interfaith Memorial Service for Haiti on January 11, 2012, I knew I wanted to cover that Brooklyn Borough Hall event.

I went with a friend and fellow-photographer, MIKE LEVERETT DORN, and since we were running a bit late, we rushed from the MTA Borough Hall subway stop into the Hall. And as we raced up the long flight of stairs I could hear Sheimyrah singing. Just (barely) in time!

New York City Police Commissioner RAY KELLY was the Keynote Speaker, and other participants in the memorial service included a variety of Haitian musical and literary artists; politicians; architect RODNEY LEON  who designed the African Memorial Burial Ground in NYC; Christian, Muslim, and Jewish spiritual and community leaders; and providers of Haitian humanitarian relief.

Yesterday afternoon, while walking back to Penn Station after visiting my dear friends Mel and Cindy staying near Central Park, I was happy to have a camera with me when I saw newlyweds and their bridal party posing for photos in Father Duffy Square in Times Square.

Temperatures were unseasonably warm that day, reaching 52°F / 11°C mid-afternoon, but the bride, wearing a strapless bridal gown, clearly was happy to put on her coat when the photo session, mainly recorded by one of the bridesmaids, was over.
