No Community Left Behind

JOE SCIANABLO, the Democratic candidate for Hempstead Town Supervisor, recently spoke at a Bellmore Merrick Democratic Club meeting.

As Scianablo walked back and forth across the front of the room (or danced, as he jokingly put it), he talked animatedly about things that mattered to a tuned-in, appreciative audience:

Joe Scianablo’s slogan, No Community Left Behind, isn’t just a catchy phrase – it’s reflected throughout his campaign.

And he doesn’t deal merely in generalities. Here are excerpts from Scianablo’s targeted plan of action and solutions in his platform page:

A Plan of Action

 First Steps

    • Full financial and operational audit of all departments and contracts
    • Implement Participatory Budgeting so projects are decided on by Regional Community Councils
    • Implement efficient pothole repair and snow removal procedures
    • Ensure full transparency in all promotions and compensation decisions
    • Cut the mail budget by thousands of dollars by creating an opportunity for residents to opt out

Common-Sense Solutions That Work

• Audit for responsible budgeting

• Government Partnerships

Apply for grant opportunities and partnerships across government, regardless of party affiliation

• Community Smart Projects

Development should bring together unions, the community, and responsible developers to deliver projects that actually work for the Town of Hempstead.

• No more nepotism and conflict of interests.

ON THE GO WITH JOE

When an audience member asked Scianablo how to find his podcast, On the Go with Joe, lots of others called out that they were interested in it too.

All that enthusiasm about the podcast motivated me to check it out after the meeting.

For each episode, On the Go with Joe serves up useful info in an engaging way. In fact, sometimes I had it playing while I worked on this post.

• “On the Go with Joe” is on several platforms: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.

Tropical Storm Isaias Slams Long Island

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (annparry.com)
August 5, 2020

My neighborhood hasn’t had power since early yesterday afternoon, shortly after Tropical Storm Isaias crashed into Long Island, so I used my iPhone 11 Pro to create and publish this post.

My daughters – one in Seaford, one in Merrick – lost power very briefly or not at all, so my family’s experience was typical, since one in three L.I. electricity customers lost power.

A tree in my backyard snapped in two several feet from the ground, with the top toppling over the fence behind it:

At dusk, I captured the above photo of the tree most severely damaged in my backyard. Just the bottom few feet of the trunk were still on my side of the white fence; the rest of the tree had fallen on the other side.  (You can see my shadow on the left side of image.)

When my daughter Sue’s power returned, I drove to her home a mile away. On my way, I passed a huge tree near the curb toppled down across the front yard onto the roof of the house, which had to be evacuated.

That night, while returning to Sue’s home to drop off some cheese and eggs to store in her refrigerator, I slowly navigated a dark maze blocked by trees felled by wind gusts up to 70 mph. All was dark until I reached her street.

Cars and pedestrians made their way by moonlight – and headlights & flashlight – on Camp Avenue in North Merrick, as seen in the below short VIDEO:

Governor Andrew Cuomo, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Tom Clavin are among the officials calling for an investigation into PSEG power company’s poor to non-existent communication with customers experiencing power outages, downed power lines….

Antique Car Show at Old Westbury Gardens 2016

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
June 14, 2016

I literally & frequently had to hold on to my hat Sunday afternoon, since it was such a breezy spring day at the Antique & Collectible Auto Show – with hundreds of vintage, classic, and collectible vehicles – at Old Westbury Gardens.

Participating vehicles in the judged show included hundreds of domestic and foreign, antique, classic, collectible, and modern cars. (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

After getting a cold soda at the refreshment table, I spotted Pastor Green and Miska – a Service Dog who helps Marine veterans – near the Free Hugs booth of Marine Corps League, North Shore Queens Detachment #240. Both the pastor and his Husky and German Shepherd mix partner were so patient as I captured photos of Miska with her arresting ice-blue eyes and white fur.

Especially because this was the rain date for the event, some participants had other commitments to go to, so the trophy ceremony began early, explained officers from the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Greater New York Region chapter, which sponsored this 50th Annual Spring Meet.

After winners got their good news and gleaming trophies, a few cars and then a few more and more began a slow procession through lush green grounds to the west gate of the Gold Coast mansion estate.

Postscript:

Driving home in Bob’s faithful 2000 Honda later that day, we passed a local business with a large American flag flying at half mast, likely in sympathy for the victims of the horrific mass shootings early that morning at the Orlando nightclub.
