SLIDESHOW  (photo video with music):

As Bob and I walked toward the Elderfields House, I was surprised to see that Susan Tiffen, my friend and fellow photographer, was already leaving the reception for The Art Guild’s Abstract Realms exhibit.

After hugs, she explained she’d come to attend the private viewing of Lasting Impressions, the documentary about Juror of Awards Dan Welden, and it had just finished.

What?!

It turned out that both Bob and I somehow had missed The Art Guild’s online and email announcements that it was presenting “Lasting Impressions,” the 2023 documentary on Dan Welden, immediately before the reception.

A variety of film festivals, organizations and venues have already presented “Lasting Impressions.” Here’s the trailer for the documentary:  productionhub.com/video/79050/trailer-for-lasting-impressions

DAN WELDEN, the Juror of Awards, is a globe-trotting painter, teacher, author, and master printmaker. He’s worked actively for health and safety in the arts.

He co-authored “Printmaking in the Sun with Pauline Muir, and is the director of Hampton Editions, Ltd. For over a half century he’s collaborated with artists such as Willem de Kooning and Kiki Smith.

Here’s an illuminating quote from his website, danwelden.com:

“I am a process person, interested in employing  materials and techniques to the ‘landscape’ of my mind. My drawings, paintings and prints evolve from the idea of linear pathways echoing  from the tracks of animals in nature, fissures in rock palisades and the  patterns created by my hands becoming ‘playful’ with my tools.”

‘Her Story Through Art’ Invitational Show at Huntington Arts Council

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (annparry.com)
February 16, 2017

Being Part of ‘Her Story Through Art’

I’m thrilled to be one of four artists in Huntington Arts Council’s “Her Story Through Art” Invitational Show! The Opening Reception – Friday, March 3, 2017, from 6-8 pm – is free and open to the public.

POSTCARD:

‘Her Story Through Art’ Invitational Show, at Huntington Arts Council, March 2017. Artists: Anahai DeCanio, Ann Parry, Tara Leale Porter, Irene Vitale. I captured photo of actress Kelli Vonshay Henderson during LIIFE 2016 Awards Ceremony at Bellmore Movies.

Since the exhibit celebrates Women’s History Month, I selected pieces from my portrait and news photography that focus on females of all ages – with emphasis on women passionately involved in civics and politics, the arts, and volunteering.

Fellow artists ANAHI DeCANIO, TARA LEALE PORTER, and IRENE VITALE are also showcased in this exhibit. It’s fun preparing for the exhibit with them, and I’m looking forward to seeing their work in person.

Friday’s Opening Reception was special for so many reasons – most notably because guests experienced four such distinct approaches to women expressing themselves through art. And the cutest reason the night was special for me was that my grandchildren, who are one-and-a-half and almost five years old, were there, along with their mom, dad, and Aunt Laurie.

Other much-appreciated visitors included friends and fellow photographers from Long Island Center of Photography; plus, several people featured in my photos came with their families.

TAKE DOWN DAY – March 27, 2017

When Bob and I arrived on “Take Down Day” after the show ended, Irene’s and Anahai’s art was already gone, and Tara was spackling where she had removed hooks from wall. Later, when I took a break from wrapping my canvases, Tara showed me how plants were sprouting in her sculpture terrarium.

Seeing the beginning of this new life  –  what a lovely way to end “Her Story Through Art.”

New York Comic Con 2015

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
October 16, 2015

I’ve never been at a more bustling or friendly event than New York Comic Con was last Saturday, October 10, 2015, at the Javits Center.

Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. October 10, 2015. L-R, Astronaut Robert (Beamer) Curbeam, who is currently tied for the record for most spacewalks (4) during a single spaceflight, and Captain JERRY LINENGER, a retired NASA astronaut and United States Navy flight surgeon, are two of the panelists on Secret Space Escapes - The Real Life Gravity Panel, at the 10th Annual New York Comic Con. Secret Space Escapes is a new series scheduled to begin November on the Discovery Science Channel. NYCC 2015 is expected to be the biggest one ever, with over 160,000 attending during the 4 day ReedPOP event, from October 8 through Oct 11, at Javits Center in Manhattan (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

Those familiar with my photos and posts of Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Museum over the years won’t be surprised my favorite panel at NYCC was about Science Channel’s new series Secret Space Escapes, which shares true stories of things going terribly wrong in space and how astronauts faced those challenges.

Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. October 10, 2015. SOYEON YI, the first South Korean in space, is a panelist on Secret Space Escapes - The Real Life Gravity Panel, at the 10th Annual New York Comic Con. Secret Space Escapes is a new series scheduled to begin November on the Discovery Science Channel. Born in 1978, Yi went into space when she was 29, traveling on Russia's Soyuz TMA-12 to the International Space Station (ISS). Astronauts  ROBERT (BEAMER) CURBEAM,  JERRY LINENGER, and SOYEON Yi  shared their personal harrowing space experiences at the Secret Space Escapes – The Real Life Gravity Panel. It was an honor meeting them all, with their warmth and laser focus – and Soyeon was born the same year as my older daughter! My family’s looking forward to the premiere of Secret Space Escapes on the Science Channel, November 10th.

Of the thousands of creative, dramatic cosplayers, above are my sentimental favorites – Princess Buttercup and The Dread Pirate Roberts AKA Westley, from William Goldman’s The Princess Bride.

One of the popular interactive attractions was STAR WARS Battle Pod Flat Screen Edition, with multiplay mode that allowed two players to play as a team.

And let’s not forget Artist Alley, which had vast aisles of talented comics artists – such as SANYA ANWAR,  PETER KUPER,  LUKE ROSS,  LOUISE SIMONSON & WALT SIMONSON – where fans had a chance to meet them, have comic books autographed, and some artists even offered option of commissioning original work.

NYCC had it all – astronauts, cosplayers, artists, games….  INCONCEIVABLE!
