Nassau County Legislature Votes to Close 4 of 8 Police Precincts

Since it wasn’t surprising I was at the Nassau County Legislative Building for much of the day – from before noon until after 5 PM yesterday – I should have brought more food than a small coconut bar, especially since the meals others brought in were off-limits for my gluten-free diet.

The Nassau County Legislature voted to Close 4 of 8 Police Precincts, many hours into their Monday, March 5, 2012 meeting, which was so well attended by residents and Press that it was often Standing Room Only.

The 19 legislators voted along party lines, with the 10 Republicans voting YES and the 9 Democrats voting NO to CLOSE the police precincts and – earlier in the meeting – to CONFIRM THOMAS DALE as Nassau County Police Commissioner.

And the pizza wafting from the waiting room outside the Legislative Chambers smelled really good.

Nassau County Legislature Postpones Controversial Police Precinct Vote

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
February 28, 2012

Before heading out to Mineola yesterday to cover Nassau County Legislature’s public meeting, I checked some government and facebook pages, and found out that the controversial vote about merging police precincts was postponed. (Vote is tentatively rescheduled for March 5, 2012.)

Long Island Cablevision’s Channel 12 News interviewed principals representing sides of this issue, including: Nassau County Legislature Presiding Officer PETER SCHMITT (Republican – LD 12) and Nassau PBA President JAMES CARVER.

Of any Nassau County legislators who have publicly weighed in on the issue so far, Republican legislative members appear to favor CLOSING, and Democratic legislative members appear to favor KEEPING OPEN, the 4 out of 8 Nassau County police precincts in question.

While getting verification about the postponement, I learned the “We the People Save our Waters Coalition” was holding a noon rally about stopping the long-term lease of Nassau County Sewage Treatment Plants, and it would be held outside the county’s Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building, so I headed out to catch that first.
