Antique Car Show at Old Westbury Gardens 2019

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
June 15, 2019

The fields were blooming with antique vehicles and family members of all ages at the 2019 Antique Car Show at Old Westbury Gardens. Just as long as you stayed hydrated, that Sunday, June 6th, was a lovely spring day for the 53rd Annual Spring Meet of the Greater New York Region chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

As I arrived at the show, awards were being announced, and the first winners I captured turned out to be brothers: SCOTT GRAMLICH of Baldwin, won two Memorial Awards for his 1925 Model T Ford [see photo above], and KEITH GRAMLICH, won a Memorial Award for his 1928 Studebaker Dictator, Club Sedan [click photo below].

SAMMY, a 14-year-old Bichon Poo, who was very woolly and very cute, enjoyed the Spring Meet with his family.

Dugan entered her blue 1951 Chevy pickup truck in the show, and when I asked where it was parked, she pointed behind her, explaining it was back several rows.

I’m a long-time 1950’s Chevy fan, so later during the show, I walked to the back rows and found Duggan’s truck, with its beautiful blue body and chrome grill gleaming in the sun.

And before we drive away, let’s enjoy one last beautiful antique, a Model A Ford, whose owner is a member of the Long Island Model A Ford Club.

Nunley’s Carousel Mural: Next Stop, Baldwin!

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (annparry.com)
March 15, 2019

  • Photo Video with carousel music captures historic Nunley’s Carousel Mural Unveiling in Garden City, on Saturday night, March 9th:

It’s not surprising that well over a hundred children and adults flocked to Nunley’s Carousel Pavilion for the Mural Unveiling Ceremony, and the free refreshments and carousel rides.

My parents brought my brothers and me to Nunley’s to ride the carousel, play miniature golf, and have pizza during the late 1950’s to 1960’s.

My daughters’ dad and I brought them to Nunley’s during its last ten years in Baldwin.

My grandson and granddaughter have each had a birthday party at Nunley’s Carousel in Museum Row in Garden City.

And that’s just a glimpse of how Nunley’s Carousel touched one multi-generational Long Island family.

Artist Michael White, a Baldwinite, shared memories of Nunley’s and explained he chose to paint a closeup of the carousel’s lead horse – which wears a striking red, white and blue banner on its shoulder, and red roses in its mane – because the acrylic mural is 7 feet tall and about 5 feet wide, so including a vast scene such as the whole carousel wouldn’t make sense.

In Fit Shape

The mural has an uncommon shape – at first glance it looks like a rectangle, but it isn’t.

The mural’s base is wider than its top, and they’re parallel.

Its sides aren’t parallel, but are equal in length, and have equal angles where they reach the bottom.

In short, with the help of two long words, the mural is an isosceles trapezoid

White’s acrylic equine needs to be that shape to fit the permanent home it’s heading to soon.

Baldwin Bound

This spring, the mural is scheduled for an outdoor installation on a trestle pillar of the Baldwin LIRR Train Station, only a 1/3 mile from the location of Nunley’s Carousel & Amusement Park in Baldwin from 1940-1995.

If my brothers and I, or if my daughters, had headed northwest after a visit to Nunley’s Carousel in Baldwin, we could have walked to the Baldwin Station in the time it takes to play the above video twice.

When it started snowing Wednesday, I decided to go to a local park to test my new Nikon fisheye lens* that arrived a few days earlier.

I’d capture 180-degree fisheye, 31-degree Fahrenheit landscapes.

Eisenhower Park, in East Meadow, with its beautiful lake and Veterans Memorial area, was too far from the pet supply store also on my itinerary, so I went south to Norman J Levy Park, in Merrick, where I found a “Park Closed Due to Weather” sign on the entrance gate.

So I headed east to Wantagh and parked along Merrick Road near the wood gazebo at the gate-less south border of Mill Pond Park.

Slowly, I walked on the partly cleared path, passed the wood gazebo, and very slowly approached the snowy shore, with a pair of swans swimming nearby and a small flock of mallards further out.
