The Long Island Fair 2013

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)

Our family was on a hay ride at The Long Island Fair at Old Bethpage Village Restoration decades ago, when my young daughter swung her arm to point at something, and the candy apple in that hand flew off the stick and across the field. Her double-take at the traitorous, empty stick – unforgettable.

Considering the county fair’s popularity, Long Islanders must have countless such fun memories of the event, which has been sponsored by the Agricultural Society of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Inc. since 1842.

And each new fair adds more memories of Civil War era costumes, dances and music; roasted corn on the cob; ribbon-winning needlework, baked goods, flower arrangements and more in the Exhibition Hall; and ponies and horses just about everywhere.

By the way, when Old Bethpage Village Restoration had a contest on its facebook page last month, the first person to correctly post the month & year OBVR first opened to the public won 4 passes to The Long Island Fair – and guess who won!

Science Exploration Moon Day – despite landing during a week-long heat wave – attracted many Long Islanders, especially families, to the Tackapausha Museum and Preserve in Seaford, New York, on July 20, 2013.

Members of Friends of Tackapausha and seasonal and part-time employees and volunteers at Tackapausha walked around animal residents, such as Zouzi the corn snake and MAPLE the Rabbit.

And children and adults were actively engaged in the science projects, such as creating green slime in the museum, and shooting off water bottle rockets outdoors.

Commemorating the 44th Anniversary of the 1969 First Moon Landing, the successful event also featured moon art and performances by Long Island artists, presented by Long Island Fringe Festival 5.

After a conversation with DICK DUNNE at the Sold Out lecture in the JetBlue Sky Theater Planetarium, Aldrin – whose social media handle is “TheRealBuzz” – autographed copies of his new book Mission to Mars and his history of space illustrated by Wendell Minor, Look to the Stars, in CAM’s LEM room.

Long Island’s Grumman Aerospace Corporation built and tested both the LM-13 Aldrin signed books in front of, and the Eagle LM-5 used during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969, when Aldrin was the second person to walk on the moon.
