This year our family welcomed a furry new member – Cleo, a tabby cat we adopted from Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation in Wantagh.

A volunteer at Last Hope told me Cleo was a friendly stray, possibly abandoned by her family, when she was picked up and brought to a veterinarian.  When she was spayed, her left ear was clipped, or tipped, so it would be easy to tell she had the operation. So Cleo’s our clipped ear cutie.

Now Cleo’s about 1 1/2 years old, and zips upstairs, checks the rooms, and flies back down at the speed of light, and when you hold her, she melts into your arms.

It wasn’t love at first sight for Cleo and her sister Hurricane Hillary, who had been Top Cat (and sole cat) after her older sister Minnie died 8 months earlier. But Cleo was super interested in her new sibling, and kept jumping over pet gates and into trouble with Hillary.

Then Cleo’s persistence paid off, and Hillary once again started enjoying having someone to play with, sit with in sunny windows, and help remind me when it’s time for their breakfast or food treats.

Madeline Singas wins Nassau County District Attorney race

In an upset victory, Democrat MADELINE SINGAS, Nassau County Acting District Attorney and first time candidate, won the D.A. race against Republican KATE MURRAY, the Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead.

At the Democratic Election Night Viewing Party at Garden City Hotel on the night of November 3, 2015, when over 99% of the precinct votes were in, Singas went to the podium with her husband THEO APOSTOLOU and their daughter and son, and thanked her supporters.

In the race for Town of Hempstead Supervisor, Democratic candidate RITA KESTENBAUM, a former member of the Hempstead Town Board, lost to Republican candidate ANTHONY SANTINO, a long-time Town of Hempstead councilman.

UPDATE – Feb. 5, 2019  [see above photo]  Claudia Borecky attended the 2015 Election Night party with her husband MICHAEL BORECKY, who died suddenly at the end of 2018, and I’m among the many who will miss this kind fellow Merrokean.

Aiming for up front seating at the BUZZ ALDRIN event at Cradle of Aviation Museum this past Saturday, Bob and I arrived at CAM well over an hour early. Waiting on line wasn’t bad, though, since I got to chat with a really nice family whose son wore an astronaut suit to see his hero in person.

In the jetBlue Sky Theater Planetarium, ‘The Real Buzz’ had a conversation with his Mission Director, CHRISTINA KORP, and had time to answer several questions from children in the audience.

Then, Aldrin left the theater to sign copies of his new book Welcome to Mars: Making a Home on the Red Planet, a National Geographic Kids book geared for Middle Grade children.
