Nigerian Dwarf Goats Walk in Norman J Levy Park & Preserve

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
May 5, 2012

Though I first met the Nigerian Dwarf Goats that live at Norman J Levy Park & Preserve about 3 years ago, this week was the first time I saw them as they walked through the grounds with a park ranger.

Due to unusually warm weather, this was the first day of the year the park stayed open until 19:30 (7:30 PM), which usually doesn't happen until later in season. (Ann Parry/Ann Parry, ann-parry.com)

Entering the parking lot, I saw a sign announcing the goats were out walking, so I asked someone at the Park Station exactly where they were. He called Park Ranger Susan, who had them up by the hilltop ponds and was about to take them back on the trail near the golf course.

This delightful, working goat herd eats weeds as it walks through the park – each day, early morning and early afternoon – using a variety of routes. It’s one of many ways the park maintains itself in a green, ecologically friendly way for Long Island’s marshland environment.

Nassau County State of the County Address 2012

During the March 14, 2012 State of the County Address, Nassau County’s Movie Industry was one of the topics highlighted by County Executive EDWARD MANGANO.

I already knew about one of the films mentioned – the Phil Spector Biopic (2012), starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren – because my daughter Sue was an Extra when some scenes were shot at Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, Mineola, in 2011.

Understandably, Extras aren’t supposed to start chatting with principal actors, but when my daughter was positioned near Ms. Mirren on the grand stairway leading to the building’s entrance, Sue was concerned how Mirren’s shawl was dragging on the steps.

So  – when the cameras weren’t on – Sue pointed out the hazardously droopy shawl to Ms. Mirren, who was charmingly grateful for the head’s up.

Nassau County Legislature Votes to Close 4 of 8 Police Precincts

Since it wasn’t surprising I was at the Nassau County Legislative Building for much of the day – from before noon until after 5 PM yesterday – I should have brought more food than a small coconut bar, especially since the meals others brought in were off-limits for my gluten-free diet.

The Nassau County Legislature voted to Close 4 of 8 Police Precincts, many hours into their Monday, March 5, 2012 meeting, which was so well attended by residents and Press that it was often Standing Room Only.

The 19 legislators voted along party lines, with the 10 Republicans voting YES and the 9 Democrats voting NO to CLOSE the police precincts and – earlier in the meeting – to CONFIRM THOMAS DALE as Nassau County Police Commissioner.

And the pizza wafting from the waiting room outside the Legislative Chambers smelled really good.
