On June 26th, Democratic Primary voters in NY Congressional District 2 will determine which candidate – LIUBA GRECHEN SHIRLEY or Leg. DUWAYNE GREGORY – challenges the long-entrenched Republican incumbent in the midterm election.

Community organizer, business and non-profit leader Liuba Grechen Shirley and Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory faced each other Monday, June 4, in a debate held by the Seaford Wantagh Democratic Club at Levittown Hall.

The two Democrats, not surprisingly, have much more in common than not, but there are differences and points they each stressed.

Gregory is the Majority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, where he’s been legislator for the 15th District since 2008, compared to Grechen Shirley who hasn’t held an elected office.

Grechen Shirley’s fundraising efforts have been more successful; plus, the mother of two toddlers recently gained national attention when she became the first female congressional candidate to get FEC approval to use campaign donations for childcare when she’s working on her campaign.

The following short videos – each about 5 minutes – are Gregory’s and  Grechen Shirley’s closing statements, and give insights about the candidates and the goals each would have if elected to congress:

  • VIDEO – DuWayne Gregory’s closing statement:

  • VIDEO – Liuba Grechen Shirley’s closing statement:

The candidates most forcefully voiced opposition for their Republican opponent running for his 14th term, Rep. Pete King, a politician they agreed neither reflects the values, nor serves the needs, of his constituents well.

When an audience member asked Gregory and Grechen Shirley what would happen if he or she didn’t win the June 26th primary – each promised to support the winner’s campaign to unseat King.

Ed Mangano, Tom Suozzi Debate, Nassau County Executive Candidates, 2013

From LONG ISLAND – by Ann Parry (ann-parry.com)
October 13, 2013

On October 8, 2013, Republican incumbent EDWARD MANGANO, Nassau County Executive, and Democratic challenger THOMAS SUOZZI, former County Executive, had a heated debate hosted and moderated by the Nassau County Village Officials Association at the Wheatley School in Old Westbury.

More than once, the moderator asked for restraint from groups of hecklers in the audience.

Opponents Suozzi and Mangano face a rematch in the November 5, 2013 elections.

Woodward & Bernstein on 40th Anniversary of Watergate

Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein speak at Hofstra

To make sure I understood it correctly, I read Hofstra University’s announcement twice that Pulitzer Prize winning journalists BOB WOODWARD and CARL BERNSTEIN were speaking there this year.

The Commission on Presidential Debates had chosen Hofstra as the site of the October 16, 2012 Presidential Debate, and the Woodward Bernstein lecture was part of a series of events leading up to it.

Ever since playing such pivotal roles in the Watergate scandal, America’s presidential earthquake in the 1970’s, the two have been investigative reporting rock stars, and I was going to see them!

Four Decades Ago

Riding past the Watergate Hotel in 1973, during the summer I spent job hunting in Washington, DC, I stared at the curved buildings as if enough willpower could summon a recreation of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters there the year before.

In 1974 President Nixon resigned after investigations spearheaded by Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein revealed break-in cover-up attempts that led all the way to the White House.

In 1976 the Academy Award-winning movie based on their non-fiction book All the President’s Men vividly brought to life the events that both brought down a president and profoundly altered the perception of the institution of the American presidency.

Back to the Present

Forty years later, on March 20, 2012, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein spoke at Hofstra University about the Watergate legacy.

First they discussed their investigation into the break-in, and its cover-up, of the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Wash. DC, which lead to the resignation of President Nixon.

Then the journalists answered questions from the full-house audience.

It was the first of a long series of outstanding Hofstra Debate 2012 Signature Events – all open and free to the public – that I covered this year. Talk about setting the bar high!
